León (pronounced lee-OWN) is the fifth-largest city in Mexico, centrally located between Mexico City and Guadalajara.
León is the leather capital of the world. Sixty percent of all the shoes produced in Mexico are made in León, along with jackets, belts and purses.
People in León enjoy more than 300 days of sunshine each year. They also love to cheer on their professional soccer team, Club León, one of the top teams in the country.
Locals head to street corners for guacamayas – sandwiches with pork skin, avocado and hot sauce – and esquites, servings of corn cut off the cob and mixed with mayonnaise, sour cream, lime juice, dried hot chili pepper and Parmesan-type cheese.
